Once upon a time, news cycles tended to go relatively quiet this time of year. That’s why we had all those interminable year-in-review pieces that littered the media landscape like so much confetti at a New Year’s bash. Gone are the days. Now, our divisions, our bones-jutting-from-the-skin fractures, our manifest cultural ugliness, keeps us on the edge of our seats waiting to hear the next outrage. Anti-vaxxers. Nitwit Nero inveighing against “windmills” (“Wind TURBINES, Bob,” yells Sparky), Rudy Ghouliani declaring he’s a better Jew. So here we are: it’s damned near Christmas and “peace on earth to people of good will” has never been further out of reach.
